Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp maple extract optional
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans optional
  • 1/4 cup crispy bacon bits optional

Instructions:

Mix the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and granulated sugar in a big bowl

Put the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract in a different bowl

Mixing until a dough forms, pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients

Avoid over-mixing

Place the dough onto a surface dusted with flour and roll it out to a thickness of 1/2 inch

Using a knife or a donut cutter, cut out rectangles

Preheat vegetable oil to 350F 175C in a deep fryer or large pot

Fry the maple bars carefully in batches for two to three minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown

After taking the donuts out of the oil, drain any excess oil by placing them on paper towels

To make the glaze, combine powdered sugar, maple syrup, and maple extract if using in a small bowl

Let the excess glaze drop off after dipping each maple bar, then set them on a wire rack to harden

Garnish the glazed donuts with chopped pecans or crispy bacon bits, if preferred

Before serving, let the glaze set for approximately ten minutes
